The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is having screen issues, appears to be limited to one specific variant

The last thing you would want to experience is any kind of fault on a flagship smartphone that cost more than a month’s pay for some. However, some customers who have received the Exynos powered Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra are facing a strange display issue.

On Reddit, people have posted about a pixelated white line running horizontally across the 6.8” QHD Super AMOLED display. What’s more intriguing is that this line is formed in roughly the same position for everyone and only shows up on QHD+ resolution.

However, the lines behave differently on one device compared to others. The lines can stay persistently on the screen or only appear when the screen is touched. But the problem doesn’t seem to be permanent and there are some tweaks recommended by Reddit users for a temporary fix.

Firstly, you can switch the colour mode to Vivid, but depending on your preference, you might not like the colour reproduction in this mode. So, the next best option is to drop the resolution to FHD+ which seems to solve the problem. According to Reddit comments, some reported to have solved the issue with a simple reboot but it isn’t clear if the problem shows up again.

In the comments section, a Galaxy S22 user mentioned they were experiencing a similar issue, but it wasn’t a single horizontal line across the screen. Rather, it was multiple horizontal lines, albeit thinner lines, appearing across the screen. But, since this issue is different from that of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, I’m not sure if the same fixes will work here. For starters, it seems only the QHD+ resolution on the Galaxy S22 Ultra is facing this issue while the FHD+ resolution is fine, but the Galaxy S22 only runs at FHD+.

Right now, it is unclear if this is a software or hardware related issue. SamMobile believes it could be software related on the Galaxy S22 Ultra as switching to a different resolution or colour mode stops the pixelated line from showing up. On the other hand, Reddit users are pointing at the AMD GPU and its buggy display drivers as the source of the issue. In both cases, a simple software patch from Samsung could put an end to this mess. However, if it turns out to be faulty hardware, Samsung should prepare itself for the increased warranty claims.

This is quite a shame as the display on the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the centrepiece of the phone. Samsung’s mobile displays have been one of the best in the business and the Galaxy S22 Ultra wears the most vivid and brightest display in the industry.

As I’m sure most of you are aware by now, Malaysia will be getting the Galaxy S22 series powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, so it remains to be seen if the display issues persist on the Snapdragon variant as well. But the wait is not long as the phone is slated to ship on the 25th of February 2022 in the US. In Malaysia, those that pre-ordered during promotion period A – before the Galaxy Watch 4 was offered as a pre-order bonus – can collect your order starting from the 3rd of March 2022.
