Can AI actually make art? | Wombo Dream App Highlight

Today, we’re highlighting a neat little app called Wombo Dream. It can generate images based on a given word or phrase. Let’s talk about it!

This app actually got popular a few weeks ago because people on TikTok were using it to make videos where people have to guess the celebrity based on the AI drawing.

How it works

Wombo Dream uses a machine-learning algorithm called a GAN, or generative adversarial network, similar to Artbreeder which is another AI art-generating service. Basically, it has its own brain and generates these images for you based on the keywords you enter. In Dream, you can also choose a specific art style, such as Steampunk, Pastel, or Festive if you want a Christmas forest with cats.

What I like and dislike about it

I think the app is pretty cool because the images it generates are quite interesting most of the time. The first time I used it, I spent hours just generating random images. I even generated artwork based on an album that I like, which was also a trend on TikTok.

I also like that it’s completely free and you can export the images without any watermarks. To do so, just click on save on the top right and download as phone background.

However, it’s not perfect. You can’t customize the aspect ratio or resolution of the final image. The biggest image I could get out of it has a resolution of 960 by 1568 pixels which isn’t bad but it’s not ideal either.

Another caveat about the app is that the results aren’t that accurate. For example, typing in “Beyonce” gave me a mess that could not capture the perfection that is Beyonce. Also, when compared to something like Artbreeder, it’s missing features like gene-editing and the accuracy of things like faces or album artwork. Regardless, I still think it’s definitely worth trying out if you haven’t already.

Availability

If you are interested, you can download the app now on either the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store. It is completely free so do have fun playing with it. Unfortunately, if you are on a Huawei device, you won’t be able to use this app because it is not available on the Huawei app Gallery.
