NVIDIA brings Fortnite back to iPhones, thanks to GeForce Now

Apple and Epic Games, the people behind Fortnite, have not had the best of relationships to say the least. There was the long and bitter court case of course, with Epic challenging Apple’s App Store restrictions because the former didn’t want Apple to take such a large cut when kids buy in-game currency. Apple for their part simply removed Fortnite from the App Store, and would countersue Epic for breaching its terms of contract with Apple. In any case, the messy affair left Fortnite fans without a way to play their favourite game on mobile since August 2020—until now that is.

NVIDIA and Epic had first teased that they’ll be bringing Fortnite to NVIDIA’s cloud gaming service GeForce Now back in November of 2020, but it seems that it certainly took them longer than expected. This would be much different from the current Fortnite that Android users might know of, which is the desktop version of the game but streamed to your phone and required a keyboard and mouse to play. The new version will be the an optimised mobile version, which includes on-screen touch controls and game menus designed for mobile phones. It’ll be pretty much the original mobile port of Fortnite, except this time you’re streaming it to your iPhone via Safari.

If you’re an NVIDIA GeForce Now user who’d like to try out the new Fortnite on the cloud gaming service, you’ll need to head over to the Fortnite Mobile page on NVIDIA’s website and sign up for the closed beta right now. It should be pointed out though that the closed beta period is limited in time, but NVIDIA has not mentioned when exactly it’ll end. Once the closed beta ends, NVIDIA says they’ll evaluate the playing experience before making any more announcements. Android users currently playing the desktop version of Fortnite on GeForce Now might also want to note that by signing up for the closed beta, they’ll get access to the new Fortnite with the on-screen controls, and will no longer be able to use keyboard and mouse to play.

Malaysian Fortnite fans though might be disappointed to hear that NVIDIA GeForce Now is technically still not available here yet. However, NVIDIA recently made GeForce Now available in Singapore, and so there is still hope for the cloud gaming service to arrive here. Alternatively, some have claimed that they were able to subscribe to GeForce Now by using a VPN and connecting to Singapore, although we cannot guarantee that this will work.
