Will the Xiaomi 12 Ultra come with a Leica camera?

Back in May, it was reported by a leakster that Leica has broken up with Huawei and is looking for a new partner. According to a post by another leakster, Digital Chat Station, it seems like the upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra might be the next smartphone to feature a Leica-branded camera system.

Digital Chat Station made a post on Weibo showing an image of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra with a Leica sticker on the back with the caption “Coming soon…”, alluding to the new Xiaomi 12 Ultra having Leica-branded cameras. The post was actually deleted a few minutes after being posted, which tells me that they might be unsure of the information as well.

Teme, the same leakster who gave us news about the Huawei-Leica breakup, also tweeted a picture of the Xiaomi and Leica logos together, but also has not provided a solid statement confirming the partnership.

There were also rumours that Leica already made a deal with Xiaomi with the phone expected to arrive Q1 of next year.

Previously, Leica was working with closely with Huawei, firstly on the P9 and finally the P50 series. With this collaboration, Huawei has stepped up its photography game and they were the pioneers of night mode and super zoom on a smartphone. In June 2021, Leica also launched their own smartphone, the Leitz Phone 1.

Right now, there’s not much known about the upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra. The rumours point to the phone having three 50MP cameras, including a 1/1.5-inch periscope zoom lens with 5x optical zoom support.

The latest reports show that the Xiaomi 12 will be powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 898, with Pro and Ultra models just like the Xiaomi Mi 11. The 12 Ultra is also expected to keep the in-display fingerprint scanner from the previous model.

We know that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra is expected to launch in Q1 of 2022, but there has been no word for its pricing yet. Although, we can expect it to be similar to the Mi 11 Ultra, currently priced at RM4,299 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage variant.
