Animal Crossing fans are treated to a massive free update. Here’s the gist of what’s coming

Nintendo released a very special Animal Crossing: New Horizons Direct over the weekend, and it’s roughly about 20 minutes of content about what’s new for the Nintendo Switch game. The announcement includes both a massive free update as well as a premium update coming on 5 November 2021.

I personally haven’t visited my own island in almost a year, and it’s partly due to me being busier with more social activities (and the thought of my Animal Crossing inhabitants giving me a piece of their minds for leaving them if I ever went back into the game). But it was never due to the fact that there wasn’t anything to do in the game. In fact, they have been very generous with free updates since its release.

However, Nintendo announced that they are releasing just one more major content update for the game. And with the amount of new features to come, it has already enticed players to want to go back to their islands. So, here are the most exciting features from the last major Animal Crossing: New Horizons update.

New spots and encounters

Fan-favourite pigeon barista, Brewster, will make his appearance in The Roost—a cafe that will open in your island’s museum. You’ll be able to order coffee, hang out with your islanders and even invite your friends over for a coffee session. Other new characters to make their debut in New Horizons include Kapp’n—who will take you on boat tours to mysterious islands, and Harriet—a hairstylist on Harv’s commune island.

Fitting the game in with your lifestyle

Animal Crossing in encouraging players to do some simple stretches by adding a Group Stretching feature at your island’s plaza. You can participate in stretching exercises along with your islanders with button controls or motion controls through your JoyCon controllers.

And if you’d rather play New Horizons at a certain time of day, you’re able to talk to Isabelle about Ordinaces. For example, the Early Bird Ordinace will make all islanders awake and active in the morning. This means that you can fit your islanders’ schedules with your real life schedule as well.

New customisations and items

You will soon be able to cook food using DIY recipes and the items you’ve grown. Ingredients like tomatoes, wheat, pumpkinds and others can be used to make different meals based on their combinations. You’ll also need your own kitchen, of course.

Other customisation additions include being able to add ceiling decor for your home, more fence options, an increase in the cap of bridges and inclines, and accent walls. Storage will also be able to expand to accomodate the new items. And arguably the most exciting item update of all is the Froggy Chair, and it will be one of the items added in the update.

Happy Home Paradise: Premium DLC Expansion

In a very cool Sims-Build-Mode-type expansion, players will be able to “Get To Work” as vacation home designers for characters. You’d get prompts based on what the characters’ personalities, and you’re able to build and design their homes to their satisfaction. You can share your designs online, and you’d even be “paid” for your work—which you can, in turn, purchase some rare items for your own island.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Happy Home Paradise will be available on 5 November. The price of the expansion is USD 24.99 (RM103.95). Pre-orders begin on 29 October at Nintendo’s e-shop. However, if you purchase the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack—which costs USD 49.99 (RM207.93) per year on an Individual membership or USD 79.99 (RM332.72) per year on a Family membership—you will get the Happy Home Paradise DLC as a bonus. The Expansion Pack also includes several Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games.

Nintendo previously teased The Roost Cafe on Twitter. Many fans also speculated the addition of gyroids to be added into the game as well—and it turned out that they were 100% correct.
