For many tabletop collectible card game players, the pandemic has meant that it’s becoming harder to meet up and play their favourite games. This is perhaps why there’s been a rise in digital card games since, with Hearthstone for instance seeing an increase in player count in the last 12 months. But for those who are also comic book fans, you’ll be pleased to hear that there’s a new DC Comics-themed digital card game in town.
Developed by Cryptozoic Entertainment, they’ve teamed up with Warner Bros. Interactive to announce DC Dual Force. This new digital card game features a new single player experience that draws on the 80 years of DC comic book history. DC Dual Force will also feature some of the most famous comic book characters in their roster, such as The Joker, Batman, Superman and Harley Quinn, with plans to eventually include all of DC’s superheroes and villains via future updates.
Players will use a 40-card deck build around a central DC comic book character. The deck will consist of Minion and Action cards to play with, with card rarities going from Common, Rare, Super Rare to Ultimate. You can also make your own deck with a combination of DC characters too, letting players get creative with their deck-building to make things like a Batman-meets-Aquaman deck for example.
A card will come under one of five factions, which are Tactics, Might, Anarchy, Energy and Tyranny. Players will pick two DC characters, be it hero or villain, and craft a deck based on these cards’ factions. The two DC characters will become your deck leaders, and have their own abilities that you can activate. You’ll then play on a 3×2 grid board, with your deck’s chosen characters starting at the back.
Seeing as there’s a plethora of comic book story arcs to pick from, DC Dual Force will focus on weekly PvE single player modes, allowing players to play through a comic from DC’s past. Cryptozoic’s Cory Jones hints that they’re already looking at Superman’s first appearance in Action Comics #1, and believes that many fans of DC comics would love to play through the stories of their favourite characters.
DC Dual Force is set to launch by Q3 of next year and will be free-to-play, though it was not confirmed as to which platforms it’ll be playable on. As to whether or not it’ll be able to challenge the genre’s big names like Hearthstone, Magic: The Gathering Arena and Legends of Runeterra remain to be seen, but comic book fans who love a card game or two might be willing to give it a try.
