DxOMark: Dual-camera iPhone 13 beats the triple-camera iPhone 12 Pro in overall score

You might think that the iPhone 13 camera bump design might be a joke due to its diagonal layout. Turns out that Apple has made significant improvements to its imaging capabilities as the dual-camera device is ranked higher than last year’s triple-camera iPhone 12 Pro Max on DxOMark Mobile.

According to DxOMark’s review, both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini score 130 points. It was given 138 points for photo, 55 points for zoom and 117 points for video. As a comparison, last year’s iPhone 12 Pro scored 128 points while the top-of-the-line iPhone 12 Pro Max which had a better main camera sensor and telephoto camera was given 130 points.

According to DxOMark, the iPhone 13 offers accurate and repeatable target exposure with nice colours and white balance. It also offers fast, accurate and repeatable autofocus while preserving good detail in daylight and under indoor lighting. However, they noticed luminance noise on both cameras during low light and there’s a limited dynamic range in challenging high contrast scenes. Due to the lack of a dedicated telephoto camera, the iPhone 13 has limited detail when using medium to long-range zoom.

The iPhone 13 is currently using a similar 12MP sensor as last year’s iPhone 12 Pro Max which offers larger 1.7-micron pixels and it has dual-pixel AF and sensor-shift OIS. This setup provides better clarity when taking pictures in low light and while recording videos. It also gets a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera that provides a 120-degree field of view.

The device can shoot 4K videos which include HDR video with Dolby vision up to 4K at 60fps. Also new on the iPhone 13 series is Photographic Styles and Cinematic Mode.

While it doesn’t look much on paper, the iPhone 13 has made a huge jump to 130 points from the iPhone 12’s 122 points recorded last year. Meanwhile, the more premium iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are currently tied at #4 with a score of 137 points.

Chinese smartphone brands continue to dominate the top spots on DxOMark Mobile. The Huawei P50 Pro is still #1 with 144 points, followed by Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra at #2 with 143 points and Huawei Mate 40 Pro+ at #3 with 139 points.
