[UPDATE] It’s not just you. WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram are down

[ UPDATE 5/10/2021 08:00 ]: Facebook has restored services for its social media apps. WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger were restored as of 8:00am Malaysian time.

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp appear to be down at the moment. The service disruption seems to be happening worldwide including in Malaysia. On a desktop web browser, Facebook.com is not reachable while Instagram.com is showing 5xx Server Error. Meanwhile, WhatsApp is currently stuck with a “Connecting…” status while other Facebook apps can’t seem to refresh to get the latest feed.

At the time of writing, downdetector has recorded a sharp increase in outage complaints about WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger in the last 30 minutes. This is also confirmed through complaints on Twitter which is currently the perfect platform to verify if Facebook’s applications are having problems. “WhatsApp” is now trending on Twitter with over 1.3 million tweets.

Besides not getting the latest social media feed, the outage is also causing problems for apps or games that use Facebook login. It isn’t clear what is causing the problem and how long it will take for Facebook will restore its services.

WhatsApp has issued a tweet acknowledging that it is having issues and they are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible. Facebook also tweeted as well about the issue and they apologised for the inconvenience caused.
