Is this the GoPro killer? Leaked DJI Osmo Action 2 manual hints at design, specs

GoPro may have just launched their new Hero 10 Black, but there’s already rumours of a competitor coming along soon. Thanks to a leaked user manual of the upcoming camera, we now know that DJI are set to launch the DJI Osmo Action 2, the successor to the 2019 DJI Osmo Action camera. There’s also already renders of it cropping up online too, though so far there’s no shots of the actual camera in use.

Serial leakster Jasper Ellens had gotten hold of the user manual for the DJI Osmo Action 2, and reveals that it will have a modular design, similar to the Insta360 One R. According to Ellens, it weighs 56g and is water resistant up to depths of 10m, though it can go up to 60m with a proper waterproof case. There’s a 1.76-inch screen on it with a 446 x 424 pixel resolution capable of 500nits of brightness.

You want more? Ok … this is from the #DJI #Action2 manual. Including the #specs list. Field of view is now 155 degrees in stead of 145. Comes with a necklace too. #thebigleak@DroneXL1 @geeksvana @dronedj @techdronemedia @DronewatchNL @DronefriendlyB @dronemodelismo @OsitaLV pic.twitter.com/SxSRm4VMhx

As for the actual camera sensor itself, DJI is apparently kitting out the Osmo Action 2 with a 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor with a f/2.8 aperture. Other camera specifications include a 155-degree wide field of view. In comparison, the original DJI Osmo Action has a 1/2.3-inch sensor with a f/2.8 aperture, and a smaller 145-degree field of view. There’ll be electronic image stabilisation via Rocksteady 2.0 and HorizonSteady,

The leaks continue to say that you’d be able to record 4K video at 60fps, which technically wouldn’t be as high resolution as the 5.3K video of the GoPro Hero 10, but 4K footage is still very respectable. You’ll also apparently be able to record in 2.7K video at 120fps or a 4x slow-mo mode in 4K at 120fps. If you lower it down even more to 1080p resolution, you’d get up to 240fps slow-mo footage. Meanwhile, normal images would be limited to 12MP photographs.

This is the #DJI #Action2. Although this picture looks tempered with. (The lens reflection is off, compared to both GoPro’s.) Other features of note include a 580mAh battery that DJI will seemingly rate for a use time of 52mins, and there’ll be WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity too. And thanks to the modular nature of the camera, you’ll be able to attach either an external screen or an external battery to the Osmo Action 2.

The supplementary display is a 1.76-inch screen with the same resolution as the main one, and has its own 1,300mAh battery. The extra battery pack meanwhile adds another 1,300mAh battery to it for a total of 195 minutes of use. You’ll get to use a lanyard and adapter setup to it too if you’d want to walk with it hanging off your neck or on a ball-joint mount.

Notice #DJI #Action2 will have a touch screen on the back of the camera module. But also on the extra ‘front touchscreen’ module.

DJI is going for a less bulky setup and I think I will get used to it fast.@DroneXL1 @techdronemedia @OsitaLV @DealsDrone @KANZHAJI @geeksvana pic.twitter.com/ggdeJu7rQH

Of course, it goes without saying that since this comes via a leaked document, you’ll still want to take everything with a pinch of salt for the time being. However, seeing as it has been over two years since the original DJI Osmo Action, it’s perhaps about time that we get a successor to the action camera.
