iPad Mini 2021 users are already reporting a new scrolling issue

Apple’s new iPad Mini has gone on sale a few days ago in some countries, and on paper looks like a fairly great option. It has the same A15 Bionic processor as the iPhone 13 with an extra GPU core, a larger screen and 5G connectivity too. However, just days after iPad Mini became available for purchase, users are already noticing an odd quirk with the screen.

It appears as though that when you’re scrolling around on the iPad Mini, one side of the screen is moving faster than the other half, resulting in something called jelly scrolling. The issue actually looks pretty subtle, but can be noticeable especially when reading text off the tablet. You can see a slow-mo video of the iPad Mini’s jelly scrolling in the video below by The Verge’s Dieter Bohn:

To make matters worse, it doesn’t appear to be an isolated case too. A number of users of the MacRumors forums have also been reporting the same, with some seeing it only in landscape while others have the same portrait jelly scrolling issue as Dieter did.

Incidentally, this doesn’t seem to be the first time this has happened to an Apple tablet either. The guys over at Blur Busters—they offer web-based motion tests for users to self test their displays—claim to have seen jelly scrolling on the older iPad Mini 5 before. According to them, it’s likely something to do with the device’s default display scan-out direction behaviour, which end up causing the pixels to refresh at slightly different times.

In the meantime, Apple has yet to issue a statement on it, but it’s safe to say that they’ll be looking into the matter. There’s no word yet as to whether this can be fixed in a software update or is hardware related, so you may want to hold off getting the iPad Mini for now if jelly scrolling is something you can’t stand.

Of course, it’s not like you can get it yet here anyway as it’s still listed as unavailable on the Apple Malaysia website. However, we do know the pricing of iPad Mini, with four different configurations available based on storage and connectivity:

  • 64GB storage, WiFi only—RM2,299
  • 64GB storage, WiFi and Cellular—RM2,949
  • 256GB storage, WiFi only—RM2,949
  • 256GB storage, WiFi and Cellular—RM3,599
