DJI may be best known for their drones, but they’ve also got a solid lineup of portable gimbals under their Osmo series. The latest entry is the DJI Osmo Mobile 5, or DJI OM 5 for short, and features some choice upgrades over its predecessors.

For starters, you still get the iconic foldable design that we’ve come to associate with DJI’s OM series of smartphone video stabilisers. It comes with a 3-axis gimbal packed into a chassis that’s a third smaller than the OM 4 for more portability and compactness. In fact, it’s just the size of your palm when completely folded down. The DJI OM 5 gimbal weighs just 290g, while the magnetic phone clamp is another 34g. It comes with a 1,000mAh battery and DJI rates it for up to 6.4 hours of use, which incidentally is less than half of the 15 hours the DJI OM 4 was rated for.

The DJI OM 5 comes with a new clamp that goes over your smartphone’s case for better protection, and has been updated to be compatible with a larger number of devices than ever before. There built-in extension rod also lets users get creative with different angles for shots, and DJI have also given the DJI OM 5 an extra button for more control over its features and functions. These include the new ShotGuides function that gives you up to 30 tutorials on setting up that perfect shot and automatically edits it your video too.

Other various features include an improved ActiveTrack 4.0 that can now track your subjects at up to 3x zoom at 5m/s. You also get the usual host of stuff like DynamicZoom, gesture control, panorama and glamour effects and the spin shot using the gimbal which can be done via the DJI Mimo app. The DJI OM 5 will be available in either Sunset White or Athens Gray, and in the box you’ll also find a tripod, a USB-C power cable, wrist strap, magnetic clamp and storage pouch.

DJI have also recently released the new Fill Light Phone Clamp, which is a magnetic clamp that has a built-in auxiliary light. This ought to be helpful for those looking to get some nice lighting and glow on their shots while using the DJI OM 5. Do note though that the Fill Light Phone Clamp doesn’t come with the DJI OM 5 and is instead sold separately.

Pricing and availability

The DJI OM 5 will be available for a retail price of RM 689 and officially ships on the 15th of September onward. It’ll also be available for pre-order from the DJI official store on Lazada and Shopee, as well as other authorised resellers and partners. Meanwhile, the Fill Light Phone Clamp will be available for RM 199 as an optional accessory sold separately from October onward.

For more information on the DJI OM 5, you can check out its product page on the DJI website.
