Samsung Galaxy S21 FE appears to be missing a most wanted fan favourite feature

The Galaxy S20 FE or known as the S20 Fan Edition is probably one of the most value-for-money flagships from Samsung. It offers high-spec internals and almost everything you need at a lower price point. Its successor, the Galaxy S21 FE is expected to launch very soon and it appears to be missing one of the most wanted features by power users.

No mention of microSD card slot

The folks at SamMobile have obtained a copy of the Galaxy S21 FE manual it appears to be lacking any mention of a microSD card slot. As a comparison, memory card expansion is currently offered on the Galaxy S20 FE series using a hybrid SIM card tray and it supports up to 1TB. This is bad news for those who prefer to get the base model and expand more storage by popping in a microSD card.

The shared document appears to be the manual for the single-nano SIM Galaxy S21 FE model. Since Samsung Malaysia usually brings in dual-SIM devices, there might be a small chance that we might get a hybrid slot on the SIM tray that can accept a microSD card.

MicroSD card expansion is becoming extremely rare in the flagship smartphone segment and this pushes users to go for the bigger storage options. The most prominent flagship phone at the moment that still offers microSD card expansion and the 3.5mm headphone jack is the Sony Xperia 1 III.

Similar to its predecessor, the S21 FE doesn’t come with a 3.5mm headphone jack and you’ll need a USB-C adapter to use your “old-school” wired headphones. Obviously, Samsung wants you to go completely wireless with its range of Galaxy Buds. Their flagship features such as IP68-rated dust and water resistance and Samsung Pay are still available. For a cord-free experience, the S21 FE also supports wireless charging as well as reverse wireless charging as shown below.

Charger sold separately

As part of its initiative to go green, the new Fan Edition is said to come without a charger out of the box. This means you’ll have to either use your existing charger or get a new USB-C power brick with Power Delivery protocol for 25W fast charging.

Based on what has been leaked so far, the new Fan Edition will run on either a Snapdragon 888 or an Exynos 2100 chip. In terms of design, it looks similar to the current Galaxy S21 but it uses mostly plastic for its exterior.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE available on 29th October?

According to Jon Prosser, his sources have indicated that the S21 FE will be launched by the end of next month. Based on information available, he reckons that Samsung will start opening pre-orders on 20th October and it will launch the following week on the 29th October.

From the looks of it, a special “Fan Edition” Unpacked event might take place in early October and we should see some teasers a couple of weeks before that. The current Samsung Galaxy S20 FE was launched on 23rd September and it was open for pre-order in Malaysia the very next day. Unlike its Exynos-powered S20 models, the S20 FE was powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 which is seen to be better when it comes to performance and battery life.

The Galaxy S20 FE 5G 256GB was launched with a RM3,399 price tag and a few months later, Samsung Malaysia introduced a cheaper Exynos LTE 128GB variant priced at RM2,699. In May this year, the LTE version was replaced with a Snapdragon 865 option and it carried a lower price tag of RM2,299.
