Will the Apple Watch get… bigger? Leaks reveal 41mm and 45mm sizes for the Series 7

There has been several leaks that reveal a possibility of the upcoming Apple Watch Series 7 being bigger than the sizes we already have for the current available watches. From the first generation to Series 3, Apple had offered 38mm and 42mm sizes before stepping up to 40mm and 44mm sizes starting with the Watch Series 4.

Leakers Majin Bu and Duan Rui tweeted images that reveal the new sizes engraved on what looks to be Apple Watch bands. Duan Rui shared an image of a possible Leather Loop band with “45mm” engraved on it, while Majin Bu shared several images of a blue “41mm” band.

Another leaker, Uncle Pan, also shared that the upcoming Series 7 watch will come in the same sizes. Uncle Pan also claims that the new wrist straps “will be compatible with the old 44mm ones”—which is good news for those getting the new upgrade if you have a favourite older strap.

The latest bands are compatible even for the very first Apple Watch model that was launched in 2015. The 44mm straps can be used on an older 42mm Apple Watch, while the 40mm version is compatible for the older 38mm model. Apple also appears to retain the same quick release mechanism where you can slide out the strap by holding down the band release button.

If these images turn out to be legitimate, Apple Watch Series 7 will have the second change of Apple Watch’s display size—Apple previously introduced a 30% bigger screen with the Series 4. Early generation Apple Watch models are offered with up to 1.53″ display for the 42mm while the current models come with a 1.78″ screen for the 44mm variant.

According to YouTuber Jon Prosser, the new Apple Watch will have a “flat design”—bringing its first redesign since 2018 as well. This could be a reason why the screen size could be a little bit bigger this year.

The Apple Watch Series 7 will likely be unveiled alongside the new iPhone 13 generation. The upcoming iPhones will go on sale on 17 September 2021.
