The Nokia XR20 is a heavy-duty 5G phone with 3 years warranty

HMD Global recently announced the new Nokia XR20 smartphone. This is their newest addition to its mid-range X-series, which is designed to outlast harsh conditions.

Rugged features

The XR20 touted as an ultra-resilient smartphone is built with a military-certified MIL-STD-810H casing that protects it against drops of up to 1.8m and weather extremes. For better screen durability, it uses Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus, which offers scratch resistance and drop protection.

To demonstrate its ruggedness, Nokia even released a video with appearances from footballers Roberto Carlos and Lisa Zamouche, subjecting the XR20 to extreme levels of testing. You can see Lisa dropping the smartphone into an ice bucket, while the XR20 gets dislodged from a goal post via a kick from Roberto.

It also has IP68-rated dust and water resistance, which allows it to survive being submerged up to 1.5m deep for an hour. In fact, Nokia says you can actually clean it with soap and water if the phone ever gets dirty.

Hardware specs

In terms of hardware specs, the Nokia XR20 features a 6.67″ Full HD+ IPS display that boasts a maximum brightness of 550 nits. The screen can also be used if your fingers are wet or when you’re wearing gloves.

The XR20 offers 5G and WiFi 6 connectivity and it runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 processor. The device comes in either 4GB RAM + 64GB storage or 6GB RAM + 128GB storage configuration. If you need more storage, you can expand up to 512GB extra through its microSD card slot.

The XR20 gets a dual-camera setup at the rear featuring ZEISS optics. It has a 48MP main camera and a secondary 13MP ultra-wide-angle shooter. Meanwhile, the front gets an 8MP selfie camera. There is also a SpeedWarp camera mode, that provides super-stabilisation in addition to letting users fast forward to the key moments of a video.

For a better audio experience, the XR20 comes with stereo speakers with a maximum rating of up to 96dB. It also features spatial audio capture with wind-noise cancellation abilities as well.

The XR20 has a customisable button on top which can be used to access your frequently used apps or task. There’s also a tiny hole that allows you to hook a lanyard.

Powering the device is a 4,630mAh battery which is rated to last up to 2 days on a single charge. It supports 18W QuickCharge 4.0 wired charging via USB-C as well as 15W Qi wireless charging.

4 years of security updates and 3 years of warranty

Out of the box, the Nokia XR20 runs on Android 11. It will get up to 3 years of major OS upgrades and 4 years of monthly security updates.

Another standout feature of the XR20 is that it comes with 3 years of warranty, which is something that many of its competitors do not offer. Most smartphones usually have a warranty period of one year, with a maximum of two years with an extended warranty offers.

With 3 years warranty and 4 years of software updates, users can enjoy greater peace of mind if they plan to hold on to their devices for a longer period of time.

The Nokia XR20 is offered in either Granite and Ultra Blue. It retails at USD 550 (about RM2,325) and it will be available starting today in selected markets. Currently, there is no news yet on its Malaysian pricing and availability.
