Sony Xperia 1 III now available for pre-order in Malaysia, priced at RM5,799

The Sony Xperia 1 III is now available for pre-order in Malaysia. This is Sony’s top-of-the-line flagship smartphone featuring a 4K 120Hz OLED display and a Snapdragon 888 5G chip.

Pricing and availability

The Xperia 1 III is officially priced at RM5,799 in Malaysia, which is the same price as an iPhone 12 Pro Max 256GB. Compared to its Mark II model, the new Mark III costs RM800 more.

Besides the high price tag, the next biggest disappointment is the free gift bundle. Instead of including the latest WF-1000XM4 or the WH-1000XM4 wireless headphones, Sony Malaysia is offering its two-year-old WF-1000XM3 ANC wireless earbuds for every pre-order of the Xperia 1 III. This is the same freebie that was included in last year’s Xperia 1 II and these days, you can easily find a pair for less than RM500 during online sales.

The pre-order will start from today 15th July until 15th August 2021. Actual availability appears to be delayed from its initial end of July target as Sony will begin deliveries on 20th August 2021. The device is offered in two colour options – Frosted Black and Frosted Purple.

If you’re interested, you can pre-order from the official Sony Store or on Shopee Mall.

Hardware Specs

The Xperia 1 Mark III gets a 6.5″ 21:9 4K HDR OLED display which boasts a fluid 120Hz refresh rate. Apart from having a flagship-class Snapdragon 888 chip, the device comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB UFS storage which is expandable via microSD card.

For taking pictures, it gets a triple-camera setup with 12MP sensors all round plus a 3D ToF sensor for faster auto-focus. The device features a variable telephoto camera that offers both 70mm and 105mm focal lenght. Both main and telephoto shooters come with optical image stabilisation and Sony uses ZEISS optics with T* coating for reduced reflections.

Like what you would expect from a flagship Sony Xperia phone, the device gets stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, IP68-rated dust and water resistance and it supports wireless charging. For better battery life, the Xperia 1 III now gets a larger 4,500mAh battery that supports USB-PD fast charging via USB-C.

Sony Malaysia is expected to release the Xperia 5 III and Xperia 10 III soon which are priced at RM4,599 and RM1,999 respectively. The Xperia 5 III is basically a compact version of the Xperia 1 III, while the Xperia 10 III is a mid-range device with a Snapdragon 690 chip. Sony’s Xperia Mark III trio all come with a 21:9 aspect ratio display, 5G connectivity, Android 11 and a 4,500mAh battery.
