A couple of days ago, Nissan announced the latest version of the Nissan GT-R Nismo, the flagship offering in the GT-R range. Along with a special edition, the GT-R Nismo is set to be launched in Japan in October, although there haven’t been any dates given for the rest of the global market. Putting aside technical, car specs like the 3.8-liter twin turbo V6 engine under the hood, or the rated 600ps of power, the Japanese carmakers also announced a very special partnership with McDonald’s in Japan.
From the 30th of April (and for a limited time only), customers in Japan will be able to buy a “Tomica Happy Set”—which appears to be Japan’s version of the Happy Meal—and get a miniature toy version of the new Nissan GT-R Nismo. In the official statement, Nissan says that the Happy Set is a popular meal at the fast-food restaurant for “children”. However, if you’ve seen the long lines that usually form whenever McDonald’s announces limited edition Happy Meal gifts such as these, you’ll know that this is a serious business for collectors out there.
Meanwhile, as reported by Hypebeast, the Tomica Happy Sets will also include toy versions of the Toyota 86, Suzuki Jimny, and Mitsubishi Delica. What’s also interesting about this burgeoning Nissan and McDonald’s partnership is that the special edition of the actual, real-life GT-R Nismo appears to have a matching livery with the miniature GT-R—complete with a reflective gold colour, and Nismo red detailing.
In any case, pictures should give you a better idea on what they all look like:
If you’re hoping to get one of these soon (and you’re in Japan), most of the toy GT-Rs you’ll be getting will be grey in colour (like the car on the right above)—but a lucky few will get the special, gold version (on the left).
So, what do you think? Would you line up for hours if McDonald’s ever brought the (toy version of) the latest GT-R Nismo to Malaysia? The American fast-food chain has, in the past, also integrated some pretty wacky stuff into their iconic Happy Meals, including VR headsets and health trackers.
