Lego has unveiled this year’s Chinese New Year-themed sets. These three new sets are available in Malaysia now, and they include Lego Story of Nian, Lego Spring Lantern Festival and Lego Duplo Town Happy Childhood Moments.
“All these novelties are rooted firmly with the Chinese culture and values, and provide a common ground for children and families to build and play together. Alongside the local mall activities, we hope to bring the Lego play closer to the hearts of our consumers and support the children with learning through the gift of play experiences this Chinese New Year,” said Rohan Mathur, Marketing Director of Lego Southeast Asia.
Story of Nian (80106)
The 1067-piece Story of Nian is inspired by the Chinese legend in which a mythical beast Nian comes around to attack villagers every Spring. It is then only driven away by the colour red, fire, and loud noise. Villagers then would also stay up late to “keep a watch for Nian” during the eve of Chinese New Year.
The set features a brick-built Chinese residence with traditional decorations—including buildable fireworks, firecrackers, hanging lanterns and Chinese couplets. It’s also got a snow theme, several Lego “family members”, a Lego figure with an Ox-head, as well as the show-stopping and posable Nian creature.
“Children will thus be able to learn the story about Nian and the various traditions that stemmed from the folklore in a fun way with Lego bricks,” wrote Lego in their press release.
Spring Lantern Festival (80107)
The Spring Lantern Festival set recreates the atmosphere of the festival which marks the end of the lunar new year celebrations. And amongst the two sets, it is not only the more detailed set but the bigger set—with 1793 pieces.
It features a brick-built Chinese garden with moon gates, a bridge, a pond with frog and koi fish figures, bamboo trees, a special ox lantern, a rabbit lantern and a Tang Yuan rice ball. The set also has modern Lego features like bubble tea, a mobile phone and a selfie stick.
Additionally, illustrations are added to the building instructions of the two new Lego sets which will tell the stories of Nian and The Lantern Festival. This is the first time that something like this will appear in a Lego Chinese Traditional Festival set, and it’s to “inspire children to learn more about Chinese traditions”.
Duplo Town Happy Childhood Moments (10943)
The 227-piece Duplo Town Happy Childhood Moments aims to tap into two critical moments of a toddlers’ life in China—Chinese New Year and kindergarten. It is customised for Chinese pre-school kids, and it can support Chinese parents to teach their preschoolers about traditions of the lunar new year and key skills to prepare kindergarten life.
With the set, children can play out Chinese New Year family traditions like exchanging their red packets, eating dumplings, and even choose to role-play and prepare for the daily routines of kindergarten like brushing their teeth and making their beds.
The Story of Nian, Spring Lantern Festival and Duplo Town Happy Childhood Moments sets are available now. Visit the Lego Malaysia website and Lego Malaysia Facebook page for more information on the Chinese New Year sets.
Lego has also recently released two realistic Lego sets that are meant to be “plant center pieces” for your home decoration. They can also be a pretty plant alternative this coming Chinese New Year if you’d want to give your house a little more pizzazz.
