Certification confirms the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra will support the S Pen

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra will have one major trick up its sleeves and it appears to be the first Galaxy S flagship smartphone to support the S Pen stylus. As hinted recently by the head of Samsung Mobile, Dr TM Roh, the Korean smartphone maker is adding some of its well-loved Galaxy Note features to other Galaxy devices.

Ahead of its official Galaxy Unpacked event that’s expected to take place as early as 14th January next year, the Galaxy S21 Ultra which carries the model number SM-G998B has appeared on an FCC listing. The report has indicated that the EUT (Equipment Under Test) “can also be used with a stylus device (S-PEN)”.

It also added that the S Pen can operate in two different inductive coupling modes of motion detection which include “hover” and “click”. The described features more or less confirm that the Galaxy S21 Ultra will carry over the same remote S Pen party tricks where you can use it as a remote control for your camera and PowerPoint slides.

Unlike the Galaxy Note series, the Galaxy S21 Ultra will not come with a dedicated silo to stow the S Pen. It’s likely that the stylus will be sold separately and Samsung will have a specially designed folio case that would come with an S Pen holder.

According to The Verge, the listing also confirms the inclusion of a wireless power transfer feature as well as WiFi 6E. The WiFi 6E which runs on 6GHz band will provide a wider bandwidth with lower latency than existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands. Also included is UWB (Ultra-wideband) which is a feature that Samsung will expand further in 2021 to provide seamless integration with your personal devices including your car.

The Galaxy S21 series is expected to run on either Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 processor or Samsung’s own Exynos 2100 chip. Samsung will unveil more details for its new Exynos processor on the 12th January 2021 and an early benchmark result suggests that it’s better than the Snapdragon 888.

Since Samsung Malaysia is typically quite generous in offering freebies during the pre-order period, we think that it is likely that the S Pen or its new Galaxy Buds Pro wireless earbuds could be bundled for free with the S21 Ultra. If the global launch is happening in mid-January 2021, we expect local pre-orders to start soon with official availability to follow a couple of weeks later.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy S21 series is expected to be the first Samsung phones to ship without a charger or wired headphones in the box. Serial leakster Roland Quandt has recently confirmed that the two accessories are not included for European sets.
