The Galaxy Z Fold 3 might be coming earlier than expected, along with S Pen support

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is Samsung’s current generation flagship folding phone, and it builds upon the original Galaxy Fold with a bunch of software upgrades, along with a larger cover display. However, the Korean company is already looking forward to next year, with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 expected to launch sometime in 2021.

The last two Folds were launched in September (2019 and 2020), but as AJUNews reports, Samsung is planning to release the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in June of 2021. Additionally, the folding phone come with support for the S Pen stylus, which will finally make its debut on a non-Note series smartphone.

The same report also confirms the rumour that there won’t be a new Galaxy Note series smartphone in 2021, which is why the S Pen is making its debut on the Z Fold 3. Meanwhile, the upcoming Galaxy S21 should also come with S Pen support—although there won’t be a way to store the stylus on the phone, according to 9to5Google. Instead, you might need to use a compatible case, if you want to carry around the S Pen.

The report also explains why S Pen support has been missing on the Z Fold and Galaxy Fold. Apparently, it has to do with how the S Pen scratches the folding displays on the two phones, although a new UTG cover layer will resist scratches better, supposedly. This means that they’ve finally created a display that’s sturdy enough to handle the S Pen—which should come as welcome news to many.

Plus, we’ll also reportedly be seeing an under-display camera for selfies, which should offer an all-screen experience. No notches or pop-up cameras here, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have a camera that’s hidden under the OLED screen. Of course, we haven’t really seen this technology in the mainstream market, so this might be one of the most interesting things about Samsung’s upcoming folding phone.

Regardless, S Pen support has long been requested—and expected. Now that Samsung might be killing off the Note series, it appears that folding phones—and the S series—might benefit. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.
