Twitter announced their global launch of Fleets—a new disappearing messaging feature which will sit right at the top of the timeline in a row, just like Instagram Stories. It is expected to roll out worldwide in the next few days.
“Some of you tell us that Tweeting is uncomfortable because it feels so public, so permanent, and like there’s so much pressure to rack up Retweets and Likes,” wrote Joshua Harris and Sam Haveson in Twitter’s blog.
Just like Snapchat or Instagram Stories, Fleets will only be available for your followers to see for 24 hours. You can write text, share a tweet, record a video or post a photo. You can also view who’s seen the Fleet.
“Those new to Twitter found Fleets to be an easier way to share what’s on their mind. Because they disappear from view after a day, Fleets helped people feel more comfortable sharing personal and casual thoughts, opinions, and feelings,” said Harris and Haveson.
You can also respond to others’ Fleets by tapping on one and sending a direct message or emoji to the creator, starting a DM message. Twitter says it will also be introducing stickers and live broadcasting at some point in the future—just like how Instagram works.
It’ll be interesting to see how people use the Fleets function. It is likely that it will be mean a more Twitter posts to view every day. It may even mean more chaotic posts—as opposed to more careful and calculated Tweets—as Twitter accounts are now more like public profiles for professionals and brands.
However, Fleets do not mean that people won’t be able to screen-cap them and keep the posts forever. Twitter will likely be combating things like harassment or misinformation as it pops up in the new feature.
A previous update Twitter added was its voice messages feature. People are able to record and send voice messages through direct messages—just like what people can do with voice tweets.
