If you have a Nikon DSLR or mirrorless camera lying around the house, you can now use it as a high-end webcam thanks to a new software released by Nikon. This comes as the demand for video calls becoming more prevalent with stay-at-home orders enforced to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Several other major camera makers including Canon, Olympus, Fujifilm, Panasonic, GoPro and Sony have already introduced similar solutions over the past several months.
The free to download Nikon Webcam Utility Software is available for both Windows 10 and Mac computers running on macOS High Sierra or higher. The software comes in handy for people who don’t own a proper webcam and have been using the built-in webcams on their laptops.
If you have a compatible camera, it is straightforward to set it up. All you need to do is install Nikon’s software on your computer, set up a tripod to mount your camera, connect your camera to your computer using the USB cable that was included with your camera and you can begin using it on your prefered video conferencing software.
According to Nikon, the software is set to work with Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, Facebook Messenger and more.
Below is a list of supported cameras:
Nikon added that users can also plug in an external microphone like a RØDE VideoMicro Mic or Nikon ME-1 Stereo Microphone to enhance their video’s audio quality. Nikon also advised users to keep their camera charged by ensuring it runs on fully charged batteries or run it through an AC power adapter.
