Yahoo Groups will be shut down, but what does this mean for your email?

If you still have a Yahoo mail account, you’d have probably noticed an email announcement made by Yahoo. It has decided to shut down Yahoo Groups on 15 December 2020.

“Yahoo Groups has seen a steady decline in usage over the last several years. Over that same period we’ve witnessed unprecedented levels of engagement across our properties as customers seek out premium, trustworthy content. To that end, we must sometimes make difficult decisions regarding products that no longer fit our long-term strategy as we hone our focus on other areas of the business,” said Yahoo.

Starting from 15 December, the Groups website will shut down—which means that members will no longer be able to send and receive emails from them. But this doesn’t mean that your email account will be affected.

“The only thing being decommissioned is Yahoo Groups (groups.yahoo.com) and emails sent from Groups. Yahoo Mail will continue to function normally,” wrote Yahoo in their F.A.Q. page.

What will happen to my Yahoo Groups?

Yahoo’s Groups is a free-to-use system of electronic mailing lists. It allowed members to subscribe to various groups—including craft-making groups, and groups for single parents.

The creation of new groups have been disabled since 12 October. But you will still be able to join groups until 15 December—but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Yahoo has suggested a few alternative sites for users to continue having group communications like Facebook Groups, Google Groups and Groups.io. However, they recommend Nextdoor as the next best option—as it has a help page advising how to switch from Yahoo to their site.
