COVID-19: 17 new cases reported today, new clusters identified in Selangor and Kedah

Malaysia has reported 17 new COVID-19 cases today which brings the total number of infections to 9,334. Unfortunately, there’s one new death reported which is a first in almost a month.

Today’s fatality is a 75-year-old Malaysian in Kedah that has a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and heart disease. The death toll now stands at 126.

The Ministry of Health has reported 10 new recoveries and a total of 9,048 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate is currently 96.94% while the mortality rate is 1.35%.

There are currently 160 active cases remaining which are isolated and receiving treatment. 7 patients are in ICU with 5 requiring respiratory support.

Out of the 17 cases today, 15 are imported while 2 are transmitted locally. The imported cases involve 11 Malaysians and 4 foreigners. This consists of 12 individuals arriving from India, 2 from Saudi Arabia and 1 from Japan (Alam Cluster).

In terms of local cases, there’s one case in Selangor from a newly identified MV Glen cluster at Port Klang and another case in Kedah from a newly identified Telaga cluster. The MV Glen cluster originated from a ship and a total of 8 individuals have been screened so far.

Meanwhile, the Telaga cluster in Kedah was detected at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah. A total of 374 individuals including family members and hospital staff have been screened and 372 of them were tested negative. The source of the infection is still under investigation.
