Report: The Google Pixel 5 will only have a Snapdragon 765G and a 90Hz display

When Google announced the mid-range Pixel 4a recently, the Snapdragon 730G processor was an underwhelming spec for some. However, Google also teased a fall release for the upcoming Pixel 5, along with a 5G version of the Pixel 4a. A couple of weeks ahead of time, a series of rendered images have now surfaced thanks to @OnLeaks on Twitter, and Pricebaba.

This might just be the closest thing to actual images of the Google Pixel, with OnLeaks proving to be a reliable source for pre-release info over the years. Do note that these aren’t official images from Google, although these appear to match Google’s earlier sneak peak of the Pixel 5’s side profile.

Meanwhile, Android Central has also obtained some of the specs that Google is supposedly planning to equip the Pixel 5 with. For one, the Pixel 5 will have a 6″ display—the overall footprint should be more-or-less the same with the Pixel 4a, but slimmer bezels mean that you get a slightly larger display on Google’s “flagship” device. The Pixel 4a 5G, meanwhile, could have a larger 6.2 display—up from the 5.81″ on the Pixel 4a.

So, why am I using the quotation marks? The same report also claims that the Pixel 5 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset, which will be mated to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. This is the same processor that the OnePlus Nord—OnePlus’ mid-range device—features at a starting price of just RM1,799. In fact, the Google Pixel 5 will also reportedly feature a refresh rate of just 90Hz, just like the OnePlus Nord.

Perhaps this is to keep pricing competitive, or this was a conscious decision made by Google to balance battery consumption, but with many flagship devices now sporting 120Hz displays, it’s still rather disappointing. Still, there will be an ultra-wide camera on the rear to complement the main shooter, while you’ll also get 15W wireless charging and 5W reverse wireless charging. Unfortunately, the exact battery size hasn’t been revealed just yet, but we do expect it to be larger than the Pixel 4’s minuscule 2,800mAh battery.

Google has already revealed that the Pixel 4a 5G will retail from USD599 (~RM2,504), although pricing details for the Pixel 5 have not been announced just yet. There has also been no word on a potential Pixel 5 XL, and it’s entirely possible that Google chooses to forgo the traditionally range-topping XL version for this year’s Pixel phones.

If you look at the launch price of the Google Pixel 4 as a benchmark (USD799, about RM3,340), the Google Pixel 5 could be a pretty expensive purchase—with some mid-range specs. The Snapdragon 765G and 90Hz refresh rate are identical to the relatively affordable OnePlus Nord, while the display size isn’t large by any stretch.

However, Google’s Pixel phones aren’t simply about hardware, of course.

If you’re looking for the latest stock Android experience, along with access to Google’s famous image processing power, the Pixel 5 (and Pixel 4a 5G) should tick those boxes.
