SOP requiring travelling family members to have same address on IC is fake news

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the National Security Council (NSC) has denied new “SOP for Travelling” has been imposed on 1st August 2020. A message has been shared on various instant messaging platforms including WhatsApp that claims that the government has introduced new rules that would affect travel by family members.

The viral message claims that if you travel with people from the same household there’s no need to wear a face mask if all individuals have the same address on their MyKad. It also claims that there’s a maximum limit of 5 persons in the car and social distancing must be practised including leaving a space in between rows in an MPV.

The message has been debunked by the MCMC including its fact-checking portal, sebenarnya.my. The authorities have not introduced any new restrictions for private cars and the previous limit of 4 passengers in a car has been lifted on 27th May.

As always if you’re not sure, do not share.

Effective 1st August 2020, the government has made face masks mandatory in public transport and crowded public spaces. Those that failed to do so will be issued a compound of RM1,000. The wearing of face masks must be practised with physical distancing by maintaining at least 1 metre distance from others.
