Xiaomi Malaysia has introduced its new Redmi 9 in Malaysia. This is their new budget phone that’s positioned below the Redmi Note 9 series but it still retains some big features including a large 5,020mAh battery.

Pricing and availability

Redmi 9 Malaysia

The Redmi 9 comes in two configurations and below is the official pricing in Malaysia:

Redmi 9 3GB RAM + 32GB storage – RM499
Redmi 9 4GB RAM + 64GB storage – RM599

The low-spec version with 32GB storage will be going on sale exclusively on the Xiaomi Global Store on Shopee this Thursday, the 18th of June 2020. On the first day itself, Xiaomi is having a flash sale where you can get the device for RM449, which is RM50 off.

Meanwhile, the higher-spec option with 64GB of storage will be released a week later on the 25th of June 2020. The device will be available across all authorised Xiaomi resellers throughout Malaysia. It comes in 3 colours – Carbon Grey, Sunset Purple and Ocean Green.

Hardware specs

The Xiaomi Redmi 9 comes with a 6.53″ Full HD+ (2340×1080) display which is a major upgrade from the previous Redmi 8. The screen comes with a tiny notch that houses an 8MP selfie camera. Under the hood, it runs on a MediaTek Helio G80 processor which Xiaomi claims to provide 107% improved performance compared to the Redmi 8. The device is equipped with LPDDR4X RAM and eMMC 5.1 storage.

Despite the low price tag, the device still comes with a quad-camera setup. It has a 13MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 5MP macro shooter and a 2MP depth sensor. It can shoot 1080p videos up to 30fps. Powering the device is a 5,020mAh battery which supports 18W fast charging via USB-C. However, a standard 10W charger is included in the box.

In terms of connectivity, it supports dual-SIM 4G LTE with VoLTE and Bluetooth 5.0 but it lacks 5GHz 802.11ac WiFi. It uses a triple-slot tray, which allows you to insert dual nano-SIM and a microSD card.

Redmi 9 features

The new budget device still retains a couple of fan favourite features including a 3.5mm headphone jack and an IR blaster. It also has a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and support for face unlock. According to the global page, the device also offers NFC but we have received confirmation that it isn’t available for the Southeast Asian market
