Sony PlayStation 5: 9 first-party games you’ll be able to play soon

Yes, the Sony PlayStation 5 has just been announced, and we’re just excited as you are to delve into the company’s next-gen gaming console. Besides the introduction of a new digital-only variant, along with a redesigned, USB-C DualSense controller, one of the highlights of the announcement was the showcasing of 9 first-party titles that you’ll be able to play soon.

Sony says that all of the games utilise the PS5’s advanced features, including something called 3D audio, with titles from iconic PlayStation game franchises such as Gran Turismo, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and more.

So without any further ado, let’s get right into it.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Building on the success of the critically-acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man (PS4), this is quite possibly one of the most exciting titles of the lot. According to creators Insomniac Games, the latest entry in the series will give gamers the chance to play as Miles Morales, the protaganist from the comic book series and the animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Based on the trailer, it already looks like the game will feature an awesome hip-hop soundtrack, just like the movie. You’ll be able to fast-travel (or swing your way) through Marvel’s version of New York City, and the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback means that you’ll be able to feel every web-swing and punch.

I honestly can’t wait for this one.

Horizon Forbidden West

Guerrilla Games has announced a sequel to the popular open-world title Horizon Zero Dawn: Horizon Forbidden West. Like many others in the list, this will be an exclusive title to the PS5 platform, with the storyling following protagnist Aloy as she navigates her way through an open-world, post-apocalyptic America.

Gran Turismo 7

Watching the trailer for this one gave me shivers down my spine, to be perfectly honest with yout. Gran Turismo has been a a big part of Sony’s PlayStation platform for a long time, with the first title in the series launched in 1997 on the original PlayStation console.

And the latest iteration of Polyphony Digital’s famed racing series gives gamers choices ranging from classic vehicles and tracks to the GT Simulation Mode. Sony also says that haptic feedback will offer gamers a “more realistic” driving experience, and you’ll supposedly be able to feel your tires against the tarmac. 3D audio will also play a big part in the experience, and this is certainly one to watch out for.

Astro’s Playroom

Developed by Japan Studios, Sony calls this a “fun platformer”, and the best part is that it will come pre-loaded on PS5 consoles for free. Just like the Nintendo Switch and games like 1-2 Switch, it looks like the free game is Sony’s way of showing off the PS5’s new capabilities for new users.

And while 1-2 Switch isn’t free, you’ll be able to play this one right out of the box. You’ll control Astro, the robot protaganist of the story, through four worlds—each based on the new PS5’s console components.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Here’s another game that should be familiar to those of you who have owned previous generations of Sony’s consoles. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, according to Sony, will showcase the potential of the ultra-high speed SSD and DualSense wireless controller, with Ratchet (and Clank) diving through different dimension. From the trailer alone, the visuals already look great—so keep your fingers crossed for an early release.

Demon’s Souls

Co-developed by Japan Studio and Bluepoint Games, one of the 9 titles showcased by Sony during the launch is a remake of the classic PlayStation title: Demon’s Souls. The action role-playing game was first launched for the PlayStation 3 in 2009, and Sony says that the remake will demonstrate the shadow effects and ray tracing of the new PS5 console.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

SackBoy: A Big Adventure is the latest title in the iconic LittleBigPlanet universe, although it’s not officially titled as such. Nonetheless, you’ll be playing the game as Sackboy, the protagonist from the series, with the options to go platforming solo, or even in co-op, multiplayer mode.

Returnal

Returnal is a third-person shooter from developers from Housemarque where you’ll fight with other players to survive a hostile planet. Sony says that the realism of the alien world setting will be amplified by the PS5’s immersive 3D audio, and we’re promised “intense positional combat”.

Housemarque’s previous titles have been more towards the arcade shooter genre, so it will certainly be interesting to see how the deeper, darker Returnal plays on the brand new PS5.

Destruction: All Stars

Lastly, we have Destruction All Stars. Developed by Lucid Games, the entire goal of the destruction derby-style multiplayer is to “wreck as many cars as possible”—and judging by the trailer, the game actually reminds me of the Twisted Metal series that first gained popularity on the Sony PlayStation.

Even with all the bells and whistles that Sony is touting with its PlayStation 5—the 120Hz refresh rate, the “ultra-fast SSD”, and the new DualSense controller, and so on—a big part of a console’s success is dependent on its library of games. Sony says that this is the largest lineup of first-party games that they’ve ever showcased for a new platform launch, so they’ve clearly taken this into account.

Official release dates for the games discussed haven’t been confirmed yet—in fact, pricing and availability details for the Sony PlayStation 5 haven’t even been announced yet. However, we do expect to see the PS5 consoles hitting the shelves before the end of 2020.

Are you excited? I can barely contain myself.
