PDRM: Face Masks not required but it’s recommended

After DBKL had retracted its mandatory requirement for face masks, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador has confirmed that police officers are not requiring the public to wear face masks when they go during the Movement Control order (MCO).

He shared that the police were only advising the public to wear mask for the safety of frontline workers. He told Malay Mail in a text message “No compulsion. Just advice. It is also for my men’s safety on the ground when communicating.”

Prior to this, there was confusion with regards to face mask usage as health authorities including the Director-General have reminded Malaysians that face masks are only required in certain scenarios. He said social distancing is more than enough and it is not necessary to wear a mask but some of us overdo it.

The MOH had tweeted that not everyone needs a mask and you should only wear it if you’re providing care to those with respiratory symptoms, if you’re a health care worker or frontliner on duty, or if you have symptoms of cough or flu.

This morning, the Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has clarified that face masks are not mandatory under the MCO. Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has just posted a new notice 3 hours ago that it is “encouraged” for all licence holders, workers, visitors, shoppers and shoppers o wear face mask until the MCO is lifted. They added that the previous directive dated 22nd March has been cancelled.
