[ UPDATE 16/3/2020 15:00 ] Boost is now supported on Samsung Pay. Here’s how to activate it.
Boost could be the first eWallet in Malaysia to be supported on Samsung Pay. In case you didn’t know, Samsung Pay is a contactless payment system which allows you to use your smartphone to replace your credit or debit card.
It appears that Samsung has teased that Boost support is coming soon. A Galaxy S20 owner had noticed a Boost “card” on the Samsung Pay download screen.
It isn’t clear how Boost will be integrated. It could just be an interface that shows your Boost QR code in Samsung Pay. This is somewhat similar to how Samsung Pay handles membership and reward cards.
At the moment, Boost has an existing partnership with UnionPay which allows you to make payments at UnionPay QR merchants. It is also possible for Boost to issue a virtual UnionPay prepaid card that can be added into Samsung Pay. U Mobile’s GoPayz eWallet that also supports UnionPay QR currently offers UnionPay prepaid card which can be requested in physical form.
If this is the case, you can use Samsung Pay at most card terminals and the transaction will be deducted directly from your Boost eWallet.
The benefit of using Samsung Pay is that you can make transactions quicker with a simple swipe on the screen. There’s also biometric security which requires authentication for every transaction. On top of that, you also can earn Samsung reward points which can be used for vouchers, rewards, gifts and other perks. At the moment, it supports a variety of credit and debit cards from most banks in Malaysia.
Apart from Boost, Grab has recently introduced its own Mastercard prepaid card which can be used with Samsung Pay. However, this feature is only available in Singapore and they are going to expand to the Philippines in the first quarter of 2020.
