eTunai Rakyat: 6 mil Malaysians have redeemed their free eWallet credit

In less than 4 weeks, six million Malaysians have successfully redeemed their RM30 eWallet credit under the eTunai Rakyat program. The latest update of the digital stimulus program was revealed by Minister of Finance, Lim Guan Eng.

He added that the government has approved 6 million applicants as of 5th February 2020 and this means that RM180 million out of the allocated RM450 million budget has been disbursed so far. The eTunai Rakyat aims to give out RM30 incentive to a total of 15 million qualified applicants.

The program is open to all Malaysians aged 18 years old and above, that has an annual income of less than RM100,000. Only three eWallets are selected – Boost, Grab and Touch ‘n Go. Do note that unutilised balance will be forfeited on 15th March.

According to the Minister, Malaysians can get RM60 for shopping as each participant eWallet operator is providing additional value added offers. It is worth pointing out that each provider has its own promo which ranges from random bonuses to cashbacks.

Apart from increasing adoption of eWallet among consumers, the program also aims at increasing acceptance among small businesses. Lim says that there are an addtional 16,182 traders and businesses that have registered for the eWallet platform.

On the first day, over RM10 million was spent by 320,000 approved eTunai Rakyat applicants. It was revealed that majority of Malaysians have utilised their RM30 credit on groceries, telecommunications, transportation and food.
