Social media users should be more concerned and responsible, MCMC

In response to the tragic incident where a 16-year-old teenager from Sarawak was found dead in an apparent suicide, the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) urges social media users to be more concerned and responsible in a statement released today.

The teenager is believed to have fallen from the third floor of a shop lot in Kuching after she posted a poll in Instagram: “Really Important, Help Me Choose D/L”.

D” reportedly meant “die” while “L” stands for “live”.

It was reported that 69% of the respondents in the poll chose the option that suggested she should die.

The MCMC said that the case is under police investigation under Section 305 of the Penal Code where it is an offence for abetting a suicide. The offence carries a maximum prison term of 20 years and a fine if found guilty.

The MCMC added that it is ready to lend technical assistance if called upon by the police.

“Indeed, social media is a platform for Internet users including teens to communicate and do useful things. Consequently, as caring and responsible social media users, if they find their online friends exhibit signs that they are about to commit suicide, reports can be made immediately to the police for investigation and action. In addition, they are also advised to inform the immediate family members or friends of the person to avoid any unexpected events”, the MCMC statement continued.

The MCMC also reminded media practitioners to respect the privacy of the victim and the victim’s family by not sharing images of the victim.
