MCMC: State Government support is crucial to increase broadband penetration

The Malaysian government is trying to bring more Malaysians up to speed with National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP). With the recent pilot project by TNB in Jasin, MCMC says that broadband can be expanded to more places when there’s cooperation and support from the state government.

According to MCMC Chairman, Encik Al-Ishsal Ishak, the Melaka state has proven that with their support and cooperation with MCMC and Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the rakyat in the state has gained a huge benefit with the availability of high-speed broadband. He added that the NFCP pilot project had demonstrated good cooperation with Majlis Perbandaran Jasin, especially on obtaining approvals for the right of way for the installation of fibre optics.

The TNB pilot project covers 1,100 homes in Felda Tun Ghafar Kemendor, Taman Merbau and Taman Maju. Jasin’s Post Office is also connected to their network and it can deliver speeds above 900Mbps. There are a total of 8 Retail Service Providers that offer plans as low as RM79/month for 50Mbps. Moving forward, MCMC is also planning to expand broadband services to hospitals, schools, libraries and police stations to bring the nation into the digital era.

The chairman also welcomes other state governments intending to view the pilot project in Jasin to reach out to them. He also mentioned that MCMC is ready to discuss with state governments to ensure that broadband access reaches the rakyat.

Apart from Jasin, MCMC is also looking into other pilot projects under the NFCP initiative. He shared that Sabah and Sarawak will begin their broadband pilot project that utilises satellite technology. More details of the project will be announced at a later date.
