For the longest time, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A has been a popular choice if you’re looking for the cheapest Android smartphone. After introducing the ZenFone Max Pro in Malaysia, ASUS is now focusing at a lower price point with its new ZenFone Live L1.
It was first spotted in Indonesia and the new ZenFone Live could pose a serious challenge to Xiaomi’s cheapest smartphone model.
Instead of a typical 5″ screen, the ZenFone Live L1 features a larger 5.5″ Full View 18:9 display that pushes a resolution of 1440×720. Under the hood, it runs on a Quad-Core Snapdragon 425 processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, which is very similar to the Redmi 5A.
For optics, the Malaysian version is said to come with a 13MP f/2.0 main camera with PDAF while the front comes with a 5MP f/2.4 selfie shooter with its own LED flash. In terms of connectivity, it supports 2.4GHz 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and it allows you to slot two SIMs with a microSD card at the same time.
Powering the device is a 3,000mAh battery which charges via microUSB. Out of the box, it runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with ZenUI 5.0. In other markets, there’s a 1GB RAM version that runs on Android Oreo Go Edition.
According to retailer DirectD, the ZenFone Live L1 will be priced under RM400. Even if it’s RM399, the ZenFone Live is pretty good value and it’s significantly cheaper than the earlier model that was priced at RM649 with a 5″ HD 720p display and a Snapdragon 410 processor.
At the moment, the Redmi 5A is priced at RM329 on the official Mi Store. The cheapest “FullView” smartphone is still the Wiko Tommy3 at RM329. However, the screen resolution is not even HD and the internal hardware specs are much lower.
