The Redmi S2 is Xiaomi’s new budget selfie-centric smartphone which was announced barely two weeks ago in China. It offers AI-powered camera features at an even lower price point and you can get it in Malaysia with 0% GST.

To recap on the specs, the Redmi S2 gets a 5.99″ 18:9 Full-Screen display that pushes a HD+ resolution of 1440×720 pixels. Under the hood, it runs on a proven 14nm Snapdragon 625 processor that’s mated with up to 4GB of RAM and up to 64GB of storage. It supports microSD expansion with its own dedicated slot.

In the camera department, the rear comes with a 12MP f/2.2 main camera and a secondary 5MP shooter. For portrait shots, it uses AI to accurately separate the foreground and background for a dramatic bokeh effect.

Since this is a selfie-centric shooter, the front features a 16MP f/2.0 main camera that has the ability to combine 4 nearby pixels to create a larger 2 micron super-pixel for better low light performance. There’s also Beautify 4.0 software enhancement and it can also shoot portrait selfies from a single camera.

Powering the Redmi S2 is a 3,080mAh battery which is charged via micro USB. Out of the box, it runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with MIUI 9 skin on top.

The Redmi S2 will be available in Malaysia from 1st June and it’s priced as follows:

Redmi S2 3GB RAM + 32GB storage – RM679
Redmi S2 4GB RAM + 64GB storage – RM849

It comes in Grey and Gold, while the Rose Gold colour will be available at a later date. You can order the Redmi S2 on the online Mi Store on Lazada as well as authorised physical stores and Mi Zones.

Alternatively, if you prefer a phone with a better screen and larger battery, you might want to consider the Redmi 5 Plus. It is currently priced at RM749 for 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, while the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage option is going for RM899. Or you could just go for the Redmi Note 5 which starts from RM799 for the base model.
