Redmi 5A

Xiaomi Malaysia has announced the Redmi 5A which is now their most affordable budget smartphone. This replaces the Redmi 4A and it comes with low price tag of just RM399. As a comparison, the previous Redmi 4A was announced at RM449.

In terms of specs, the Redmi 5A is quite similar to the model it replaces. It still gets a 5″ HD 720p display and it runs on a Snapdragon 425 processor that’s mated to 2GB of RAM. There’s 16GB of onboard storage which is expandable via microSD.

For imaging, it gets a 13MP f/2.2 main camera with PDAF while the front comes with a 5MP f/2.0 selfie shooter. The Redmi 5A supports dual-Nano SIM and it has its own dedicated slot for a microSD card. Out of the box, it runs on MIUI 7.0 with Android 7.1 out of the box. Since it’s a very entry level device, the Redmi 5A lacks a fingerprint sensor at the back.

Powering the device is a slightly smaller 3,000mAh battery (Redmi 4A: 3,120mAh) which Xiaomi says it can last up to 7 hours of video playback and 6 hours of gaming. In terms of connectivity, it supports 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1 and 4G LTE in both TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE bands. The Redmi 5A also has an infrared blaster on top which you can use as a universal remote.

The Redmi 5A will be on sale exclusively through Lazada Malaysia beginning 12 December 2017. It will be available with a metallic matte finish in Dark Grey and Gold. If you’re looking for something bigger, there’s the Redmi Note 5A (RM549) and Redmi Note 5A Prime (RM699).
