Devs are taking advantage of the iPhone X’s True Depth camera for face capture apps

Looks like there’s a lot more to be done with the iPhone X‘s new True Depth camera than we though, with visual effects artists taking advantage of the technology for face mapping.

Taiwanese visual effects artist Elisha Hung, a visual effects artist at Moonshine Animation (who produces for ASUS and MSI) captured his face using the iPhone X’s camera and then used Xcode and Apple’s augmented reality framework ARKit to fetch the data. He then transformed it into 3D renders, and you can see the results in the (slightly freaky) video below:

Brad Dawyer, the founder for game company Hatchlings, 3D printed his face using raw data from the iPhone X’s camera:

This only shows the potential of the True Depth camera system, and it’ll likely have lots of uses in future apps (or animations) that need face-mapping once developers start making full use of Apple’s facial recognition tech.

Who would have known that a phone could make such amazingly accurate face capture?
