The LG V30 will be the first phone in the world to have an f/1.6 aperture lens

The smartphone camera wars are heating up. While everyone’s fawning over the iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy Note8, LG just dropped a bombshell regarding their camera that makes things super interesting. The South Korean company just announced that their upcoming smartphone will have the fastest aperture lens on any smartphone yet.

Following last week’s revelations regarding the LG V30’s display, this week, LG’s new nugget of information about their upcoming phablet concerns its camera. LG says that they will “incorporate an f/1.6 aperture camera and glass lens in the dual camera of its upcoming V30 flagship smartphone” which would make it — at least thus far — the smartphone with the widest aperture lens yet. Compared to an f/1.8 aperture lens like the one on the LG G6, the V30’s f/1.6 lens will be able to let in 25% more light.

But that’s not where the magic stops. LG also talks about including glass in the camera’s lens element which is a pretty big deal. LG says that the V30 will also cut distortion at the edges by a third compared to the V20 when capturing wide-angle shots.

LG also says that despite the larger aperture and new glass lens, the camera module itself will be 30% smaller in size than the V20. It’ll also come with laser detection AF, optical image stabilisation and electronic image stabilisation.

LG’s V series of smartphones have always been pretty amazing devices so it’s good to see LG push the envelope further with the V30. Exciting stuff lies ahead and all will be revealed on the 31st of August 2017.
