3 things you probably won’t get on the 2017 Google Pixel

The Google Pixel is turning a year old very soon and a new replacement is just around the corner. Earlier last month, we saw what appears to be its successor and it looked pretty good. It had a 18:9 display aspect ratio with ultra-thin bezels as shown above.

Evan Blass (@evleaks), famed for reliable leaks had just dropped more info on the upcoming device and it seems that final product will have some disappointing omissions. Read on to find out what would be left out on the next Pixel for 2017.

The original Google Pixel and Pixel XL were manufactured by HTC but for this year, HTC will be making the smaller Pixel while the larger model will be made by LG.

No fancy Infinity/Full Vision Displays

Unlike Samsung and LG, Google isn’t obsessed about making Infinity or FullVision displays. From Evan’s latest leak, the next Pixel XL pictured above could likely feature a standard 16:9 display with a noticeably thick forehead and chin. LG does have the experience of making large screen phones with smaller footprint and we’ve seen that on their LG G6 and LG Q6 models. HTC, who’s in charge with the smaller Pixel may not have the expertise to do so which is why the front of HTC U11 still looks virtually the same as its predecessors.

No Dual Cameras

2017 seems to be the year of the dual camera. The top flagships from Apple, Huawei, LG, OnePlus, Xiaomi and Samsung are making this a standard feature to offer an extra edge for photography. Some are using the secondary lens to offer wide-angle or zooming features while others are putting a dedicated monochrome sensor to capture greater details.

The upcoming Google Pixel is still having a single camera but that doesn’t necessary mean it’s a bad thing. The current Google Pixel has one of the best cameras on a smartphone and it scored the highest DxOMark Mobile rating. It held the number 1 spot until it was overtaken by the HTC U11, which also comes with a single camera lens. After all, it is the quality that counts and it really depends on how each phone takes full advantage of its camera sensor.

Bye bye headphone jack

Remember how Google poked fun at the iPhone 7’s lack of a headphone jack during the Pixel launch? Guess what? The upcoming Pixel is said to be dropping the 3.5mm port too. So Google has to bundle a pair of USB Type-C headphones like HTC or include a cumbersome 3.5mm to USB Type-C audio adapter in the box.

On the flip side, the upcoming Pixel appears to be getting a pair of front stereo speakers. If you crank up your screen’s brightness up to the max, you’ll notice a thin grill underneath the display which is similar to the earpiece at the top. If this is true, the new Pixel would offer a better music and video playback experience than a single down firing speaker on the current Pixel and Pixel XL.
