vivo might introduce a new feature that the Galaxy S8 had failed to do

Having a bezel-less display appears to be a big deal right now. After Xiaomi introduced its Mi Mix, we’ve seen other manufacturers pushing a bigger display on a smaller footprint like the Galaxy S8, LG G6 and most recently, the Essential phone.

The biggest setback with these devices is the placement of the fingerprint sensor. They are all placed at the back and personally, I think the most practical position is at the front as you can unlock your device easily when it’s on a table. But, if the screen is going to dominate the entire front of the phone, where would the fingerprint sensor be?

Now it appears that vivo could be solving that problem with a new device that has a fingerprint sensor embedded underneath the display. Word has it that it could be revealed very soon at the end of this month.

According to speculation, vivo has finally nailed the implementation of an embedded fingerprint sensor. In a leaked video, a purported vivo device is seen with an always-on display that has a symbol of a fingerprint on the lower half of the screen. The device unlocks when a thumb is placed over the icon but it took slightly longer than most fingerprint sensors we’ve seen today. You check out the fingerprint sensor in action over here.

The folks at vivo Malaysia had revealed yesterday that they would be unveiling a new “Black Technology” feature during Mobile World Congress Shanghai which is starts on 28 June. We could be wrong but this might be referring to its new on-screen fingerprint sensor feature. If this is real, we hope vivo would introduce this on their upcoming models and it’s not just a mere technological showcase.

Many manufacturers have attempted to introduce such feature but they had to go back to the old school fingerprint sensor. The Galaxy S8/S8+ apparently were supposed to come with an on-screen fingerprint sensor but they had to resort to its oddly placed rear-mounted unit as it didn’t perform up to expectation. Now word has it that the upcoming Galaxy Note8 will still retain a rear-mounted sensor. Looking at the new leaks, Apple might be introducing an on-screen Touch ID on the iPhone 8 since the entire front is dominated with a large display with thin bezels on all sides.

Which would you prefer? An on-screen fingerprint sensor or a rear-mounted unit? Let us know in the comments below.
