The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is all about that juicy battery life

Xiaomi’s Mi Max was pretty interesting when it first launched. It was essentially a really big Redmi Note 3 and thanks to its gentle price point, users who wanted huge but reasonably powerful budget phablets had a device they could turn to.

Today, Xiaomi reveals the Mi Max’s successor. Simply called the Mi Max 2, the new handset is doubling down on battery life.

Kicking things off, the Mi Max 2 is powered by a 14nm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor, which isn’t too surprising since Xiaomi is also using that chip in the Redmi Note 4. Although it’s a slight downgrade in performance from the Snapdragon 650 hexa-core chip, the Snapdragon 625 is a lot more power efficient. This means that you can expect awesome battery life (2 days, according to Xiaomi) from the Mi Max 2 since it’s got a massive 5,300 mAh battery now.

Still, the Snapdragon 625 is no slouch and paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of internal storage, I don’t think people will notice a performance drop in daily activities, unless maybe if you’re a big mobile gamer. It does retain a microSD card slot so you can expand internal storage.

There is no “high-spec” version with a more powerful processor like there was last time, though, which is a little unfortunate.

Besides that, the Mi Max 2 retains its 6.44-inch Full HD display (450 nit brightness) but this time augments it with stereo speakers that utilises the earpiece for L-R stereo sound when in landscape mode. The Mi Max 2 also retains the headphone jack which is good news.

What’s more, Xiaomi also upgraded the camera module so now it features a Sony IMX386 sensor with larger 1.25-micron pixels (up from the 1.0-micron pixels on the original Mi Max). This new camera module also has PDAF support and HDR imaging. In front, you will find a 5-megapixel f/2.0 aperture selfie shooter with various beauty modes.

In addition to the massive battery, the Mi Max 2 also supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 fast-charging technology and parallel charging via USB Type-C. According to Xiaomi, it will let you get 68% of charge in just one hour which, considering the size of the battery, is mighty impressive.

Xiaomi also put effort into the Mi Max 2’s design as it features a new discreet antenna arrangement (think iPhone 7) and is more rounded at the edges of the full-metal unibody which is supposed to give it better single hand feel. You will also find a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, so that much hasn’t changed.

Xiaomi’s Mi Max 2 will come in two variants. The base model with 64GB of internal storage is priced at RMB1,699 (around RM1,057). Alternatively, you can pay RMB1,999 (around RM1,243) to double the storage to 128GB. It only comes in one colour and that colour is Gold.
