Here’s what to expect from the Galaxy Note7’s Iris Scanner

One of the new tricks on the Samsung Galaxy Note7 is its new iris scanner. Unlike the conventional face unlock, this supposedly is more secure giving you the speed to unlock at a glance.

This is similar to the ZTE Axon and Microsoft’s Lumia 950/950XL. Meanwhile, the folks at Android Authority have obtained more screenshots of the setup process which gives us a clearer picture of its functionality.

For starters, the feature is listed as “Irises” underneath the Fingerprint set up. When setting it up for the first time, you’ll be prompted by a long list of disclaimers. According to the list, the iris scanner works best if you’re not wearing any glasses or contact lenses and it may not work as well if you have narrowed or puffy eyes.

The list also suggests a dedicated “Iris Recognition Camera” on the Galaxy Note7 that’s accompanied by a LED light. It claims to work best with a distance between 25-35 cm from your face and you would need to position your eyes according to the circles shown on the screen. Since it relies heavily on its front cameras, this works ideally in well-lit indoor situations and it could fail if it’s either too bright or too dark.

From the earlier video, the scanner works rather quickly but it does require a couple of steps like waking up the phone and flicking upwards to start scanning. Personally, I think I’ll be sticking with the conventional fingerprint unlock which is more practical. In case you missed it, the Galaxy Note7 is launching next Tuesday at 11PM (Malaysian Time).
