Out of the blue without much fanfare, Sony Mobile has officially announced its new Xperia Z4 flagship smart phone. Like the recently announced HTC One M9, the Xperia Z4 looks similar to its predecessor model, Xperia Z3 but it gets some incremental updates under the hood.
The front retains the same 5.2″ display that does a full HD resolution of 1920×1080. Powering the device is Qualcomm’s top end 2.0GHz Snapdragon 810 Octa-Core processor that’s mated with 3GB of RAM. The on-board storage however gets an increase to 32GB and it has an expandable microSD slot that supports 128GB extra. As you would expect from a flagship Sony Xperia, it also gets water and dust resistance at IPX5/8, IP6X.
For imaging, it retains the same 20.7MP BSI main camera with 25mm wide angle lens that supports 4K video recording but the front is now upgraded to a higher resolution 5MP camera. For its battery, it gets a smaller 2,950mAh non-removable unit (Z3: 3,200mAh) and as a result, it is much thinner at 6.9mm (Xperia Z3: 7.3mm) and weighs just 144 grams (Xperia Z3: 152g). Since the Xperia Z4 sticks to a standard Full HD resolution, it may still be able retain its famed “up to 2 days” of battery life.
For better group selfies, the front 5MP shooter also gets a 25mm wide angle lens and there’s even a digital image stabilisation for a more steadier shot. For those who love taking food pics, there’s a cooking mode to make your #foodporn pics more vibrant.
The build quality should be similar with its current Xperia Z3 with the use of rounded metal frames on each end. In terms of colours, it is available in White, Black, Copper and Aqua Green. Another welcome change is having an exposed microUSB port as what we’ve seen in the earlier leaks. This makes charging easier without the hassle of a waterproof flap cover.
So far, the Xperia Z4 is only listed on Sony Mobile’s Japan site and there’s no word of it being released overseas. What do you think of the Xperia Z4? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
