Duracell creates a wireless charging solution that’s more complicated than wired chargers

Wireless charging is supposed to make life easier. Whenever your device needs to juice up, you can just leave it on a wireless charger without worrying about cables. For devices that doesn’t come with wireless charging built-in, the usual solution is to buy a wireless charging case or a cover with a charging coil built-in. Somehow the guys at Duracell think that’s too complicated so they have introduced something else instead.

What you’re seeing above is the Duracell micro USB Ring which houses the induction charger coil that can be plugged onto any device like a USB OTG thumb drive. While this sounds good for compatibility, the execution of it is rather flawed. To charge on the charging mat, you can probably imagine how impractical it is to position the ring on the wireless charger. Guess what, they actually thought of it and also included in this US$54 (about RM200) solution is a dummy stand so that it can support your device. In terms of support, it only supports PMA wireless charging which is different from the more popular Qi chargers that adopt WPC standards. Apparently its main company, P&G is a member of the Power Matters Alliance (PMA).

A wireless charger that requires 3 separate components? We would rather stick to fast wired chargers any day.
