6 months after the iPhone 6 Plus bendgate became the trending topic, the “Bending” question is still a question for every new device in the market. Square Trade, a company that specialises on mobile protect plans have put 3 devices – the iPhone 6 Plus, the HTC One M9 and the double curve Galaxy S6 edge on a pressure machine.
How well does the Galaxy S6 edge perform against its metal body rivals? Watch the video after the break.
From the test, the S6 edge bends at 110 pounds (49.8kg) of pressure similar to the iPhone 6 Plus. Meanwhile the new HTC One M9 bends at a slightly higher 120 pounds (54kg) and this also marks its end of the road as the power/wake button had failed to work, rendering the device unusable. Continuing to apply pressure on both the S6 edge and iPhone 6 Plus, the S6 edge was completely destroyed at 149 pounds (67kg) while the iPhone 6 Plus could withstand a little more at 179 pounds (81kg).
Is it a cause of concern? For the most of us, probably not unless your day to day usage would undergo such insane amount of pressure. But here’s the thing to remember. The bendgate issue started because of initial complaints that the iPhone 6 Plus had bent under reported normal use like leaving it in a pocket. This was further exaggerated when it got bent with bare hands.
Apple didn’t ignore this and they had acknowledged 9 official complaints during its initial release. From the looks of it, Apple appears to be strengthen its iPhone 6 Plus for its newer batch as Consumer Reports had done a similar test before where it starts to deform at a lower 90 pounds (40kg).
Interestingly they didn’t test the normal Galaxy S6 version which comes with a flat metal frame cross the sides, which in theory should perform better. For the S6 edge display to crack first is pretty much expected since it wraps around the entire front surface. While most devices could still work from minor accidental drops, it is always advisable to buy a case if you intend of keeping them scuff free.
