Nikon was actually one of the first to introduce a compact camera that runs on Android with its COOLPIX S800c about 2 years back. It came with a 16MP sensor and 10X Optical zoom which is quite impressive at that time. However it was underwhelming in terms of hardware and runs on a dated Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. Shortly after that, Samsung came and stole the limelight with its better Galaxy Camera. Samsung then expanded its product line up which includes the Galaxy S4 Zoom and a higher end Galaxy NX which both are also running on Android.
For 2014, Nikon has released its newer COOLPIX S810c which comes with a larger 3.7″ screen and 12X Optical Zoom. On the software side, it now runs on a newer Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and like its predecessor it stays connected using WiFi and has GPS for location tracking. For videos, it is capable of shooting 1080p Full HD with stereo sound. It also gets a Lens-Shift Vibration Reduction system and an ISO range that goes up to 3200. It is an improvement over its previous model but it doesn’t seem to be compelling enough to fight the latest Galaxy Camera 2 and other photography centric smart phones like the Nokia Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520.
The Nikon COOLPIX S810c will be available beginning of May at US$349.95 (about RM1,128) and comes in choice of Black and White colours. For more information, you can check out Nikon’s COOLPIX S810c product page.
