The tides have turned. In its latest report Gartner published an astonishing figure — Android tablets now dominate 62% of the global tablet market. This is a big deal because since Apple reinvented the tablet computer, iPads were the number one brand. There was a point in time where iPads were the only tablet you’d see in people’s hand.

Now iPads are not so ubiquitous.

Fueled by a strong demand for low-cost and a growing base of first time tablet buyers, sales of Android tablets have grown a whopping 127% in 2013 to become the top tablet operating system in world. In contrast Apple’s market share dropped 16.8% in the same year.

Android may be the dominant tablet operating system, iPad remains the top selling tablet brand in 2013 selling almost double the number of tablets compared to its closes rival, Samsung. Apple sold over 70,000 tablets accounting for 36% of the global market share while Samsung sold just under 37,000 tablets making up 19% of the worldwide tablet market.
