MWC 2013 Hands-On: Motorola RAZR i & RAZR HD

The last piece of our MWC 2013 booth coverage series is Motorola where we get a hands-on of the Motorola RAZR i and the RAZR HD. Following its popular waffle thin Motorola RAZR, we have seen the RAZR MAXX and the range continues with a new Intel Atom processor model and a larger 4.7″ HD model.

Motorola RAZR i

The RAZR i is a 4.3″ Android device which is similar to the original RAZR but instead it runs on a single core 2.0GHz Intel Atom processor mated with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage which is expandable with microSD. The front display is similar as the original RAZR with its Super AMOLED Advance screen that pushes qHD 960×540 resolution.

In the hands, it feels smaller than the original RAZR thanks to its thinner bezel and shorter height. However it is thicker at 8.3mm and weighs 126 grams with its embedded 2,000mAh battery. While the original Android RAZR is sexy thin, the RAZR i feels more comfortable to hold. There are 3 colours available – White, Black and Pink. Both Black and Pink comes with kevlar at the back however for the White version, the RAZR i uses strengthen PET plastic to maintain its desired colour.

It has a front facing VGA camera and over at the back, it has 8MP camera capable of shooting 10fps. The burst mode on the RAZR i is a little different where you’ll just need to tap the shutter button once to take 10 shots instead of holding onto the button. With a dedicated button, the camera loads up from sleep in under 1 second.

Motorola RAZR HD

Next we have a RAZR HD which comes with a large 4.7″ Super AMOLED display that pushes 1280×720 pixels resolution. Powering the device is a dual-core 1.5GHz processor with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The device is thicker at 8.4mm due to its bigger 2,500mAh battery but it is 1mm narrower than the original RAZR which has a much smaller 4.3″ screen. Over at the back, the RAZR HD too retains the same soft touch matte Kevlar cover but it feels more weighted at 146g.

In the imaging department, it comes with a similar 8MP shooter but the front facing camera has a more up-rated 1.3MP camera. Over at the sides, it has a microSD expandable slot and a HDMI port. When announced in Q3 last year, the RAZR HD was among the high-end models to look out for but now Motorola seems to be lagging behind other brands that are pushing out quad-core and Full HD displays.

So far there’s no indication whether both devices will reach Malaysia since Motorola Mobility has downsized its presence in Asia Pacific. Hopefully Motorola Mobility under its owner Google has some surprises for us in 2013.
