MWC 2012: Samsung Outs First Device for MWC. Galaxy Beam with Built in Pico Projector

Samsung has just unveiled its first device for this year’s MWC. The Samsung Galaxy Beam has a 5.0 4.0-inch screen and a built-in 15 lumens pico projector that’s capable of projecting HD images and videos up to 50-inches diagonally.

The Galaxy Beam features a 4-inch 800×480 Super AMOLED display, 1GHz dual-core processor, a 5MP rear camera and a 1.3MP front-facing camera. There’s also 8GB of onboard storage plus a microSD slot, and quad-band HSPA+ connectivity, all in a 12.5mm thick shell. Powering the device is a 2,000mAh battery.

However, a smartphone with built-in projector is not a new concept for Samsung. Back in 2010, Samsung launched the Galaxy Beam GT-I8520. The original Galaxy Beam ran on Android 2.1 and featured a 720MHz TI OMAP 3440 processor with 384MB RAM. There’s also 3.7 inch Super AMOLED screen, 16GB of on board memory, Micro SD expansion up to 32GB and an 8MP rear camera. Like the new Galaxy Beam, the GT-I8520 was able to project images and videos up to 50-inches diagonally as well.

This was two years ago, so expect the new Galaxy Beam to get a major bump in specs, at least similar to the Galaxy S II perhaps even better. We’ll update you when Samsung releases more details.

Head after the break for more pics and demo video.
