Nobody wants to crack their smartphone screens and that’s probably why screen protectors are popular especially tempered glass. According to a global study, 85% of smartphone owners have dropped their devices at least once and 55% at least three times in the past year.

Now Corning has just announced a new tougher Gorilla Glass 5 which literally takes glass protection up to greater heights.

Most flagship smartphones today rely on Gorilla Glass 4. When announced, it was able to withstand drops from 1 metre height face down on a 180 grit sandpaper at an 80% survival rate. 1 metre is typically waist height and it was quite remarkable at that time.

For upcoming flagship smartphones, the new Gorilla Glass 5 is now able to survive up to 80% of face-down drops from 1.6 metre height onto rough surfaces. This raises the bar in screen protection especially for drops from the shoulder level. So if you accidentally dropped your phone while taking a selfie, you’ll have higher chances of surviving a crack with the latest glass.
