Sony has officially introduced the MDR-3R, a pair of lightweight wired headphones modelled after the original MDR-3 that debuted alongside the TPS-L2 Walkman in 1979. Rather than relying on vintage analogue connections or wireless battery packs, the revived model pairs its classic late-1970s / 1980s aesthetic with a native USB-C interface tailored to modern smart devices.
Sony MDR-3R Malaysian Pricing and Delivery Dates

The Sony MDR-3R lineup is now listed for pre-order in Malaysia through Sony Malaysia’s online store. The standard MDR-3R retails at RM259, while the Stranger Things Edition (yup, that Netflix series) is priced at RM299.
According to Sony Malaysia’s official website, delivery for the standard variant will begin in the middle of this month. Those who prefer the Stranger Things Edition have to wait slightly longer, as their unit will only be shipped towards the end of the year.
Classic Architecture Adapted for Contemporary Use

The MDR-3R retains the minimalist, open-ear structure that helped establish portable audio culture nearly half a century ago.
Its physical build centres around an ultra-slim metal headband and swappable foam earpads, provided in the iconic bright orange and blue colourways. Continuing the heritage theme, Sony has also styled the product packaging and printed documentation after the original release materials from the Walkman era.

To integrate with current hardware ecosystems where the 3.5mm headphone jack has largely disappeared, the MDR-3R terminates directly in a USB-C plug. The integrated cable also incorporates an in-line remote and microphone to handle voice calls and basic audio playback controls.
This configuration enables immediate plug-and-play functionality across compatible smartphones, tablets, and personal computers without the need for dongles, battery charging, or wireless pairing steps.
Re-Engineered Acoustics and Collaboration Variant
Audio output is handled by 23mm dynamic driver units engineered to closely replicate the acoustic characteristics of the original MDR-3 design.
Sony states that the drivers have undergone subtle contemporary tuning adjustments to provide a balanced frequency response, emphasising natural vocal reproduction while accommodating modern media production standards. Due to the inherent open-ear format, ambient sound remains naturally audible during use.

In addition to the standard version, Sony is releasing the MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition to commemorate the 1980s-set streaming series. Reflecting the on-ear headphones famously worn by character Max Mayfield, the special variant introduces an engraved franchise logo on the frame, an alternative red-and-black foam earpad configuration, and themed collector packaging.
